How to download your BMO transactions as a file
Short answer: In BMO Online Banking on a computer, open Accounts, select your account, then select DOWNLOAD to the right of the Transactions header and fill out the form. Choose .ofx (read directly) or CSV. BMO's help says the download covers two months. For a BMO CSV, you may need to pick the date, description and amount columns.
Before you start
- Use a computer. BMO documents the download in Online Banking on the web. We couldn't confirm it in the BMO app, so use a computer browser. Mobile banking apps often can't export transactions.
- You need a CSV, OFX or QFX file, not a PDF. Subloupe can't read PDF statements.
- One file per account or card is fine. You can import several files at once.
Download your transactions in BMO Online Banking
These steps come from BMO's own help page (see sources below).
- Sign in to BMO Online Banking in a web browser on a computer.
- Select Accounts, then select the account you want.
- To the right of the Transactions header, select DOWNLOAD.
- Fill out the form: pick the format (.ofx or CSV) and the dates.
- Download and save the file.
BMO credit cards: look for the same download option on your card's transactions page. We couldn't confirm it on BMO's help pages.
Which format to choose
| Format | Use it? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| .ofx | Yes, recommended | Read directly, so there are no columns to pick |
| CSV | Yes | Goes through the generic reader: you may need to pick the date, description and amount columns |
| QuickBooks, Quicken, Simply Accounting | Quicken works if the file is .qfx | Pick .ofx or CSV if you're unsure |
How far back can you go?
BMO's help says the download covers two months of history. To cover more, download again each month and import all the files together.
One month of statements is enough to start; add more months to catch yearly renewals. If your bank limits each download, save several files that cover consecutive periods and import them together. A few days of overlap between files is fine.
Import the file into Subloupe
- Open the statement import.
- Drop your file or files, or choose them. Your browser reads them on this device: nothing is uploaded, and Subloupe never asks for your bank login.
- An .ofx file is read directly. A BMO CSV goes through the generic reader: you may need to pick the date, description and amount columns.
- Select Add to dashboard to review. Nothing is decided in the import window: what it found appears on your dashboard under To review. For each charge, choose Keep, Not a subscription, Pause, Cancel it or Delete, or use Review all to Confirm all or Dismiss all at once. Phone, internet and energy bills are grouped under Bills and are only added if you tick them.
If something goes wrong
- "PDF statements can't be read": go back to online banking and download the transactions as CSV, OFX or QFX instead.
- "No transactions found in this file": check that the period you picked has transactions, or try the other format.
- Dates or amounts look wrong: import the original file, not a copy you opened and saved in a spreadsheet app, which can change dates. If you're asked to pick columns, choose the date, description and amount.
FAQ
Why does BMO only give me two months? That's the window BMO's help gives for downloads. Save a file every month or two, then import the files together.
Should I pick CSV or .ofx? Pick .ofx if you can: it's read directly. A CSV works too, but you may need to pick the columns.
Is it safe to import my bank statement? The file is read in your browser and never uploaded. Only what it finds is saved, in your browser, for you to review; the file and its transactions are discarded. You never share your bank password.

Import your file into Subloupe. It adds the recurring charges it finds to your dashboard to review, with what each costs per year. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded. Import and detection are free. No account, no bank login.
Subloupe isn't affiliated with BMO. Menu names change: if a step doesn't match what you see, search your bank's help centre for "download transactions". Facts checked October 28, 2026.
