How to download your National Bank transactions as a file

Short answer: In National Bank online banking on a computer, open your account's Transactions tab and look for an export or download option; pick OFX/QFX if offered (read directly) or CSV. National Bank documents this export for business online banking; we couldn't find an official page for personal accounts. Monthly statements are PDFs, which Subloupe can't read. For a CSV, you may need to pick the date, description and amount columns.

Before you start

Find your transactions in National Bank online banking

National Bank's personal help pages show where your transactions are, but we couldn't find one that documents an export. Here's what is documented, and what to look for.

  1. Sign in to National Bank online banking in a web browser on a computer.
  2. In the left menu, select Bilan (your summary), then select your account.
  3. Open the Transactions tab.
  4. Look for an export or download option. If you see OFX or QFX, choose it; otherwise choose CSV.
  5. Save the file.

Business online banking: National Bank's help documents it: filter the transactions, select Export, then choose CSV or QBO/OFX/QFX (up to 10,000 transactions at a time). Avoid the PDF option.

If you only find PDFs: the Documents and statements section gives you monthly statements as PDFs. Subloupe can't read those, so look for the transaction export instead.

Which format to choose

Format Use it? Notes
OFX or QFX Yes, recommended if offered Read directly, like OFX files from any bank
CSV Yes Goes through the generic reader: you may need to pick the date, description and amount columns
PDF (statement or export) No Subloupe can't read PDFs

How far back can you go?

We couldn't find an official limit on how far back a personal export goes. Pick the longest period offered.

One month of statements is enough to start; add more months to catch yearly renewals. If your bank limits each download, save several files that cover consecutive periods and import them together. A few days of overlap between files is fine.

Import the file into Subloupe

  1. Open the statement import.
  2. Drop your file or files, or choose them. Your browser reads them on this device: nothing is uploaded, and Subloupe never asks for your bank login.
  3. An OFX or QFX file is read directly. A National Bank CSV goes through the generic reader: you may need to pick the date, description and amount columns.
  4. Select Add to dashboard to review. Nothing is decided in the import window: what it found appears on your dashboard under To review. For each charge, choose Keep, Not a subscription, Pause, Cancel it or Delete, or use Review all to Confirm all or Dismiss all at once. Phone, internet and energy bills are grouped under Bills and are only added if you tick them.

FAQ

I can't find an export button. What now? National Bank hasn't published export steps for personal accounts that we could find. Check the Transactions tab on the website (not the app), or ask National Bank how to download your transaction history as CSV or OFX.

Can I use my PDF statement? No. Subloupe can't read PDFs. You need a CSV, OFX or QFX file.

Is it safe to import my bank statement? The file is read in your browser and never uploaded. Only what it finds is saved, in your browser, for you to review; the file and its transactions are discarded. You never share your bank password.
