How to download your RBC Royal Bank transactions as a file

Short answer: In RBC Online Banking on a computer, use the option to download your transactions to accounting or financial software, choose the spreadsheet (.csv) format, pick your accounts and how far back to go, then download. RBC's help says most accounts cover about 90 to 120 days. Subloupe has a built-in preset for RBC CSV files.

Before you start

Download your transactions in RBC Online Banking

RBC's help page (in French) describes the download; its menu names may have changed since, so look for the general wording below.

  1. Sign in to RBC Online Banking in a web browser on a computer.
  2. Go to the page that lists your account balances.
  3. Look for the option to download transactions to accounting or financial software (RBC's French help calls it « Télécharger dans un logiciel de comptabilité »).
  4. Choose the spreadsheet (.csv) format.
  5. Select the account or accounts (chequing, savings, Visa or line of credit).
  6. Choose how much history to include, then continue and save the file.

Which format to choose

Format Use it? Notes
Spreadsheet (.csv) Yes, recommended Subloupe has a built-in RBC preset
Quicken or Microsoft Money Works if the file is .qfx or .ofx Read directly, like OFX files from any bank
eStatement (PDF) No RBC says eStatements can't be downloaded to software, and Subloupe can't read PDFs

How far back can you go?

RBC's help says the download covers 90 to 120 days for most accounts. For an RBC Visa, it covers your current activity and your last statement.

One month of statements is enough to start; add more months to catch yearly renewals. If your bank limits each download, save several files that cover consecutive periods and import them together. A few days of overlap between files is fine.

Import the file into Subloupe

  1. Open the statement import.
  2. Drop your file or files, or choose them. Your browser reads them on this device: nothing is uploaded, and Subloupe never asks for your bank login.
  3. The RBC preset recognizes RBC CSV files automatically. QFX or OFX files are read directly too.
  4. Select Add to dashboard to review. Nothing is decided in the import window: what it found appears on your dashboard under To review. For each charge, choose Keep, Not a subscription, Pause, Cancel it or Delete, or use Review all to Confirm all or Dismiss all at once. Phone, internet and energy bills are grouped under Bills and are only added if you tick them.

FAQ

Why can't I find the download option? RBC has redesigned Online Banking since its help page was written. Look for a Download link near your account activity, or search RBC's help for "download transactions".

Can I download my RBC Visa? Yes. RBC's help lists Visa among the accounts you can download, with the current activity and last statement.

Is it safe to import my bank statement? The file is read in your browser and never uploaded. Only what it finds is saved, in your browser, for you to review; the file and its transactions are discarded. You never share your bank password.
